Definition

AAC stands for “Augmentative and Alternative Communication,” and “includes all forms of communication (other than oral speech) that are used to express thoughts, needs, wants, and ideas” (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 2014, What is AAC section, para. 1). AAC encompasses tools and strategies that serve to augment or act as an alternative to speech as a mode of communication.
